Timber Sales
Timber sales are prepared by first determining the best type of harvest and sale for the clients
property and objectives. Trees are usually individually selected, measured, and marked and records
kept so the total sale volume and value can be estimated. Contracts and terms of sale are prepared
after consultation with the landowner, and potential buyers are notified of the timber sale.
Competitive bids are usually sought to obtain the highest price possible for the trees being sold,
although other arrangements may be made at times. Prospective buyers get a tour of the sale area
and are provided with sale information from which they can prepare a bid. Bids are opened at a
given time and place and the signing of contracts occurs shortly thereafter. TLCs responsibility does
not end there. We continue to monitor the progress and oversee the operation on behalf of the client.
Our job is not done until the operation is completed, the roads and landings are seeded, and the client
is satisfied. We may also be able to advise you on some timber income tax tips.
A university study in Georgia indicates that landowners having a forester prepare a timber sale on
their behalf, resulted in an average increase in price obtained by 68%**. At TLC, we believe our
carefully marked sales improve forest productivity, and often bring a higher price for less timber
volume than sales directly conducted by the landowner.
