Appraisals of Timber
A timber appraisal is an estimate of standing timber value, usually obtained through an intensive
cruise or inventory. This is a sampling technique to determine approximate timber volumes,
along with the quality and tree species involved. A study of market values and sale comparisons
enables valuation by species, which, along with logging cost estimates, gives a good idea of what
the standing timber is likely to bring on the present market. Timber appraisals are useful in
estate planning and settlement cases, basis calculations, loan value estimates, timber sale income
planning, and conservation easement valuation.
