Cacapon and Lost Rivers Land Trust

The Cacapon and Lost Rivers Land Trust is a not-for-profit local land trust that assists landowners and communities throughout the Cacapon and Lost Rivers watershed in maintaining healthy rivers, protecting forests and farmland, and in preserving rural heritage for the enjoyment and well being of present and future generations.

The Cacapon and Lost Rivers Land Trust is one of the first land trusts in West Virginia. It is now

the largest and fastest growing in the state. Presently more than 6,230 acres of land have been

permanently protected from excessive, uncontrolled development that threatens to change

the face of West Virginia forever.

In the photo above, Ralph M. Spaid and his cousin Imogene Foster, sign a conservation easement

for over 1,650 acres of family land with The Cacapon and Lost Rivers Land Trust and the

Potomac Conservancy, so they can continue to manage the timber and farm the property.

On most properties, traditional farming and forestry operations continue and wildlife habitat is preserved.

There can be significant tax savings for landowners donating a conservation easement to the trust,

as well as the satisfaction of knowing that one's family lands are protected permanently. In some

instances, it may be the only way the family land can be passed on to future generations to enjoy.
